What Are the Two Islands?
Imagine your prospect standing on one island , Problem Island. This is where they are right now, dealing with frustrations, pain points, and challenges. Across the water is another island , Desire Island. This is where they want to be, living their dream outcome.
You are the bridge between these two islands. Your job is not to pitch or convince. Your job is to help them see the gap, feel the urgency, and trust that you’re the best person to help them cross.
The Problem Island Questions
These questions help you understand where they are now and what pain they’re experiencing. Ask these with genuine curiosity:
- Question 1: “What’s your biggest concern when it comes to [their goal/service]?”
- Question 2: “Have you worked with anyone before on this? What was that experience like?”
- Question 3: “What’s held you back from achieving [desired outcome] so far?”
- Question 4: “If nothing changes, what does that look like for you in 6 months or a year?”
These questions surface pain, past experiences, fears, and consequences. Listen carefully to their answers , they’re giving you the exact language to use when presenting your solution.
The Desire Island Questions
Now shift the conversation to where they want to go. This creates emotional contrast and builds excitement:
- Question 1: “If we could solve [their problem], what would that mean for you?”
- Question 2: “What’s your dream outcome for [their project/goal]?”
- Question 3: “Who do you want to impress with this? What would their reaction be?”
- Question 4: “How would achieving this change things for you personally or professionally?”
These questions paint a vivid picture of success and tap into emotional motivators beyond the practical benefits.
Bridging the Gap
Once you’ve explored both islands, here’s how you connect the dots and present your offer:
The Formula:
“Based on what you’ve shared, it sounds like [restate their problem] is really holding you back from [restate their desire]. The good news is, this is exactly what I specialize in. Here’s how I’d approach it…”
Example (Wedding Photographer):
“Based on what you’ve shared, it sounds like you’re worried about your photos feeling staged and not capturing the real emotions of your day. And you really want your family and friends to feel like they’re reliving the moment when they see the photos. The good news is, this is exactly what I specialize in , documentary-style storytelling that captures authentic moments. Here’s how I’d approach your wedding…”
The Mindset Behind It
Old Way: Talk about yourself, your gear, your credentials, your packages, your pricing structure.
New Way: Ask questions. Listen. Reflect back what they said. Show them the gap. Position yourself as the bridge.
The best salespeople speak only 10-20% of the time on a call. (See: AI prompts for sales calls.) They ask questions, listen deeply, and then tie their offer directly to what the prospect just told them.
Why This Works
High-budget clients don’t buy based on price. (See: price coaching packages.) They buy based on confidence. When you demonstrate that you understand their situation better than they do, they trust you to solve it.
The Two Islands framework ensures you’re not guessing what matters to them , they’re literally telling you. All you have to do is listen, reflect, and connect the dots.
