Instagram DM Strategy for Coaches: How I Get 14 Sales Calls a Day From New Followers
DMs are where Instagram money is made. Not posts, not stories: DMs. A post reaches people. A DM converts them. Every coach who is consistently booking calls from Instagram has a DM system. This is that system.
Why DMs Convert Better Than Any Other Channel
- It’s 1-on-1: personal, not broadcast. The person feels seen, not marketed to.
- The barrier to action is low: they’re already on the app, already typing. All they need to do is reply.
- You can qualify them before booking a call: no wasted calls on people who aren’t ready or can’t afford you.
- The conversation happens where they already are: you don’t need to get them to click a link, open an email, or leave the app.
Email converts at 1–3%. DMs, done right, convert at 20–40%. The math alone should tell you where to focus.
The 3 Types of DM Conversations
- Inbound (they DM you first), highest intent, close fastest. They came to you. They’re already interested. Your only job is to not mess it up.
- Comment-triggered (they comment, you DM), medium intent. They engaged publicly, which means they’re open. Your DM is a natural follow-up, not a cold message.
- Outbound (you initiate), lower intent, requires more warmth. This works but takes longer. Use it to fill gaps when inbound is slow.
Start with inbound and comment-triggered. Get those systems working before you spend energy on outbound.
The Auto-DM System (How to Get 14 Calls Per Day)
The auto-DM system is the single highest-leverage thing you can add to your Instagram right now. Here’s how it works:
- Use a keyword trigger in your posts: “Comment AUDIT and I’ll send you the link”
- Instagram’s auto-DM feature sends a message automatically when someone comments that word
- They get the link instantly, no waiting, no friction
- You get their message in your inbox, which opens a two-way conversation
- Follow up within 1 hour with a personal reply
The reason this works at scale: the comment shows social proof (hundreds of people commenting the keyword), the auto-DM delivers instant value, and the follow-up turns a transaction into a conversation. Most coaches skip the follow-up. That’s where the calls come from.
The DM Conversation Framework
Every high-converting DM conversation follows the same five steps:
Step 1: Acknowledge: “Hey [Name]! Saw you’re interested, great. Quick question: what’s your biggest challenge with [niche] right now?”
Step 2: Listen and mirror: Repeat their exact words back. “So you’re saying [their words], is that right?” This builds trust faster than any pitch. People feel understood when you use their own language.
Step 3: Qualify: “How long has this been a problem for you?” and “What have you tried already?” These two questions tell you whether they’re ready to invest in a solution.
Step 4: Offer the call: “Based on what you’ve told me, I think I can show you exactly what’s missing in 20 minutes. Want to hop on a quick call?”
Step 5: Send the link: Only after they say yes. Never before. Sending a booking link before they’ve agreed to a call kills the conversation.
What NOT to Do in DMs
- Don’t pitch in the first message (ever). It signals you care more about your sale than their problem
- Don’t send a wall of text, short messages feel like a conversation; long messages feel like a presentation
- Don’t use copy-paste openers, people can tell, and it kills trust immediately
- Don’t follow up more than twice, anything beyond two follow-ups turns you from coach to pest
The Follow-Up That Doesn’t Sound Needy
Most coaches either follow up too aggressively or not at all. The right cadence:
Day 3: “Hey [Name], just checking, did you get a chance to look at the link I sent?”
Day 7 (final): “Last message: I have a spot open this week if you want to use it. Either way, no worries!”
Then: let it go. No more follow-ups. This final message works because it creates mild scarcity (“a spot open this week”) without pressure, and the “either way, no worries” removes any awkwardness. It converts better than any aggressive follow-up sequence.
Turning Comments Into DMs
Not every comment needs an auto-DM trigger. Sometimes the best DMs come from a simple manual move:
- Reply to every comment publicly first, always
- Then DM them: “Replied to your comment, wanted to add one more thing privately…”
- This opens the conversation naturally, without it feeling like a pitch
The key is that the DM feels like a continuation of a conversation that’s already happening, not a cold approach.
