I grew my Instagram organically to over 140,000 followers with no paid ads, as a coach. The first 5K took 2 years. Almost everything after that came in the years since.
The difference wasn’t posting more. I was already posting daily. The difference was understanding what the algorithm rewards and building content around that instead of guessing.
I’ve since helped experts and coaches grow their Instagram. (See: optimize your Instagram profile.) Not all of them hit 75K. Most don’t need to. The coach who went from 300 to 2,400 followers booked 11 clients in her first 6 months. The one at 67K followers? She books about the same. Follower count and client count are two different games. I’ll teach you both.
The growth formula: reach x conversion x consistency
Instagram growth comes down to three things. (See: Instagram growth checklist.) Get your content in front of new people (reach). Make those people follow you (conversion). Do it every day (consistency). Most coaches focus on consistency alone. They post daily but reach the same 200 people. Consistency without reach is a treadmill.
Reach: how to get in front of new people
Reels are the primary reach tool in 2026. A feed post reaches 10-20% of your followers. A Reel can reach 10x your follower count if it resonates. I’ve had Reels reach 500K people from an account with a fraction of my current following.
The algorithm pushes Reels that hold attention. Not Reels that are pretty. Track your average watch time, not your views. A Reel with 5,000 views and 90% average watch time outperforms a Reel with 50,000 views and 15% watch time. Instagram will show more of your content to new people when your retention is high.
How to improve retention: hook them in the first 2 seconds. Open with a statement that creates curiosity or tension. “You’re losing clients because of your bio” works. “Hey guys, today I want to talk about bios” doesn’t. The first 2 seconds determine whether someone watches the other 58.
Conversion: turn viewers into followers
Someone watches your Reel. They tap your profile. They see your bio, your grid, your highlights. In 3 seconds they decide: follow or leave. Most coaches lose people at this step because their profile looks like a resume instead of a solution.
Your bio needs to answer one question: “What do I get from following this person?” Not “what does this person do.” I help coaches get clients from Instagram. That’s what my bio says. Not “Coach | Speaker | Educator | Dog Mom.”
Your grid should show a mix of your face, client results, and value posts. All text-graphic grids look spammy. All selfie grids look like a personal account. Mix it. My ratio: 40% talking-to-camera Reels, 30% client results and screenshots, 30% text-based tips and frameworks.
Consistency: the minimum viable posting schedule
You don’t need to post 3 times a day. That’s a myth spread by people selling content courses. (See: sell coaching on Instagram.) My minimum recommendation for coaches: 1 Reel per day, 5 Stories per day, and engage with 10 accounts in your niche for 15 minutes. (See: Instagram content ideas for coaches.)
Total time: 45 minutes per day. If you can’t do 45 minutes, do 30. The math is simple. 1 post per day = 30 posts per month = 30 chances for the algorithm to show you to new people. 3 posts per week = 12 chances. More content, more reach. But quality matters more than quantity.
The growth milestones (what to expect)
0-1,000 followers: This is the hardest stretch. The algorithm has no data on your account yet. Focus on Reels with strong hooks. Post daily. Engage authentically with 10-15 accounts in your niche. Expect to reach 1,000 in 60-90 days if you’re consistent.
1,000-5,000 followers: Growth accelerates. Your content starts getting shown to non-followers. Double down on whatever Reel format performed best. If talking-to-camera Reels work, do more of those. If text overlay Reels work, do more of those. This phase takes 3-4 months.
5,000-25,000 followers: You’ll start getting viral Reels (10K+ views) semi-regularly. Use that momentum to convert viewers into email subscribers. Add a lead magnet to your bio. “DM me GROWTH for my free Instagram checklist.” This is where you build the foundation for consistent client bookings.
25,000+: At this point your content has compounding returns. Each post reaches more people because the algorithm trusts your account. Shift focus from growth to conversion. Make sure every post has a clear next step for potential clients.
3 mistakes coaches make when trying to grow
Copying trending audios without a strategy. Trending audio can boost reach, but only if the content is relevant to your audience. A coaching coach lip-syncing to a pop song gets views from teenagers, not from potential coaching clients. Use trends only when you can tie them to your message.
Buying followers or engagement. I can spot a bought account in 5 seconds. So can the algorithm. 10K followers and 12 likes per post signals fake growth. Instagram suppresses accounts with unnatural engagement ratios. Grow slow. Grow real.
Waiting to be “ready.” Your first 50 posts will be rough. That’s fine. My first Reel got 47 views and I sounded nervous. My 200th Reel got 340,000 views and booked me 23 sales calls. You can’t skip the awkward phase. You can only get through it faster by starting.
Your first 7 days: the starter plan
Day 1: Fix your bio using the formula above. Take a new profile photo (good lighting, look at camera, smile). Set up 3 highlights: About Me, Client Results, How I Help.
Day 2: Film your first Reel. Use the “I used to…” format. Talk about your own transformation. Keep it under 60 seconds.
Day 3: Post a client result. No clients yet? Post your own result. “I went from [before] to [after]. This is what I learned.”
Day 4: Film a micro-lesson. One tip your ideal client needs to hear today. Keep it specific.
Day 5: Share a personal story in Stories. Show your workspace, your process, or a moment from your day.
Day 6: Post a “stop doing this” Reel. Call out a common mistake in your niche.
Day 7: Review your insights. Which post got the most reach? The most saves? Do more of that next week.
That’s it. 7 days, 7 posts, and you’ll have more data about what works for your audience than months of overthinking would give you.

How fast can a coach grow on Instagram?
With the Reach x Conversion x Consistency formula, most coaches can go from 0-500 followers in month one, 500-2,000 in months 2-3, and start seeing consistent client inquiries at 1,000-2,000 engaged followers.
Should coaches buy Instagram followers to grow faster?
Never. Bought followers don’t engage, don’t buy, and tank your engagement rate, which makes the algorithm show your content to fewer real people. 500 real followers who DM you beats 50,000 ghost accounts.
