How I Grew My Instagram to Over 143,000 Followers With No Paid Ads (And What I Got Wrong the First Time)
Most people trying to grow on Instagram are doing the same thing: posting every day, hoping something lands, wondering why the number barely moves. (See: optimize your Instagram profile.)
I grew my Instagram organically to over 143,000 followers with no paid ads. Not by posting every day. Not by following and unfollowing people. Not by buying followers. Not by going viral once and riding it. (See: go viral on Instagram.) One system, applied consistently. That’s what this page breaks down.
But first, the reason most people are stuck.
Why Most People Stay Stuck Under 5K
It’s rarely about effort. Most people stuck under 5K are working hard. The problem is the strategy. Specifically:
- Posting random content instead of niche content: Instagram’s algorithm doesn’t know who to show your content to if you post about five different topics. Pick one lane and own it.
- Creating content instead of documenting: Most people try to produce polished, high-effort content. The accounts that grow fastest document their real process. Raw, honest, specific beats produced every time.
- Posting when inspired instead of on a system. Inspiration-based posting leads to inconsistent output. Inconsistent output means the algorithm deprioritizes you. Systems beat inspiration at scale.
- Optimizing for likes instead of follows and calls. Likes feel good. Follows pay bills. Clients come from calls. If your content is optimized to get reactions rather than to get people to take action, you’ll have a nice-looking account and an empty calendar.
The Core Strategy: Document, Don’t Create
The shift that changed everything for me: stop creating content and start documenting your work.
Think about how you talk at a networking event. No script, no performance, just honest answers to “what do you do and how do you get results?” That’s the energy that works on Instagram.
Post about YOUR process, not generic advice. “How to get clients” performs worse than “How I got my last 3 clients.” One is a tip. The other is a story people can follow and learn from.
People pay more attention to “How I get results” than “How to get results.” The first implies you’ve done it. The second implies you’ve just read about it. That difference matters more than most people realise.
Profile Optimization First
Before you post another piece of content, fix your profile. A great post sent to a weak profile loses half its follow potential. Check these three things:
- Profile photo: Clear, well-lit, professional. If you’re a photographer, your camera should be visible. It’s a signal. People should be able to see what you do in your photo.
- Bio: The outcome for THEM, not a description of YOU. “Wedding photographer” is a description. “I help brands look premium on a budget” is an outcome. Write the outcome.
- Link: One clear action. A booking link, a free resource, a course signup. Not three links, not a Linktree with eight options. One action you want people to take.
Content Types That Actually Grow Accounts
Not all content grows followers at the same rate. These four types consistently outperform everything else:
- Your results and case studies: Before/after shots, client results, specific outcomes. “I helped this client go from X to Y” with proof. Show the work.
- Behind the scenes of your work: The shoot prep, the editing process, the client call, the mistakes. People want access. Give it to them.
- Controversial opinions in your niche: Not manufactured controversy. Your actual opinions where you disagree with the conventional wisdom. “Why I stopped using [popular tool]” or “The advice everyone gives that I think is wrong.”
- “How I did X” specific, real numbers.“How I landed a €5,000 client with a 3-message DM script.” Specific, personal, proven. This format gets shared and saved more than anything else.
The Outsourcing System (How to Post Daily Without Doing It All Yourself)
Here’s how I post 7 times a week in about 1–2 hours of actual work:
- Voice memo: I speak my content instead of writing it. A 2-minute voice memo walking through an idea, a result, a story.
- Transcribe with ChatGPT: Paste the transcript, ask it to clean up the structure while keeping my voice.
- Structure with AI: Turn the cleaned transcript into a caption or video script using a template.
- Send to video editor: The raw recording goes to my editor. They handle the cut, the text overlays, the pacing.
- Post: I review and approve. Done.
The whole system takes 1–2 hours a week for 7 pieces of content. Most people spend that long on one post because they’re doing everything manually.

The Results You Can Expect
I want to be straight with you on timelines, because a lot of growth content sets unrealistic expectations.
Meaningful follower growth takes 3–6 months of consistent system application. The early months feel slow. You’re building the infrastructure, the right content mix, the right profile positioning, the right posting rhythm. The compound effect kicks in around month 3.
But here’s what I’ve seen happen faster than follower growth: the calls start coming before the followers do. When your profile is positioned correctly and your content speaks directly to the right people, the right people find you. One decision-maker seeing three of your posts and booking a call is worth more than 1,000 random followers.
So measure both. Follow the system for followers. But watch your inquiry rate from day one.
