How to Get Testimonials That Actually Close Coaching Clients

You can have the best coaching program in the world, but if nobody else is saying it, people won’t believe you. Testimonials are the most underused sales tool in coaching. And most coaches either don’t collect them, or collect the wrong kind.

A good testimonial doesn’t say “Sam is amazing!” It says “I went from zero clients to 8 paying clients in 6 weeks.” That’s the difference between a compliment and a conversion tool.

Why Testimonials Beat Every Other Sales Tactic

When you say “my coaching gets results,” it’s marketing. When a client says “I got results from this coaching,” it’s proof. Your prospects trust strangers more than they trust you. That’s not an insult. It’s human nature. And it’s exactly why testimonials work.

A single specific testimonial posted on Instagram will outperform ten posts about your methodology. It answers the one question every prospect has: “Does this actually work for someone like me?”

How to Ask for Testimonials (Without Being Awkward)

Most coaches feel weird asking for testimonials. So they don’t ask, and they never get them. Simple fix: build it into your process.

The right moment: Ask right after a client has a breakthrough or hits a milestone. Not at the end of a 12-week program when the emotion has faded. The moment they say “I just signed my first client!”. That’s when you ask.

The exact script: “I’m so happy for you! Would you mind sharing that result in a quick voice note or text? It would really help other coaches who are in the same position you were in when we started.” That’s it. No pressure. Most people say yes because they’re riding the high of their win.

The screenshot method: When clients message you results in DMs or WhatsApp, ask “Can I share this as a testimonial? I’ll blur your name if you prefer.” Screenshots of real messages are more believable than polished quotes on your website.

The 3 Types of Testimonials That Convert

Not all testimonials are equal. The ones that close clients follow one of these three patterns:

1. The Transformation Testimonial

Before → After. This is the most powerful format. “Before working with Sam, I was posting every day and getting zero inquiries. After 6 weeks, I had a content system that brought in 4 clients without running a single ad.” Clear starting point, clear result, clear timeframe.

2. The Objection-Killer Testimonial

This addresses a specific doubt prospects have. If people think your coaching is too expensive: “I hesitated because of the price, but I made back 3x my investment in the first month.” If they think they don’t have time: “I was working 60-hour weeks and still implemented everything in 2 hours a week.”

3. The Credibility Testimonial

From someone with authority or a recognizable role. “As a psychologist with 15 years experience, I was skeptical about content coaching. Sam’s system completely changed how I attract clients.” The person’s title or background adds weight to their endorsement.

Where to Use Testimonials for Maximum Impact

Collecting testimonials is only half the job. Placing them where prospects see them at the right moment is what closes deals.

Instagram feed: Create dedicated testimonial posts. Screenshot the DM, add a caption that tells the client’s story in 2-3 sentences. These posts don’t get the most likes, but they get the most DMs from people ready to buy. Pair this with your content that sells coaching packages.

Instagram Stories: Share a testimonial screenshot, then follow it with a CTA. “Want results like this? DM me RESULTS.” This plugs directly into the Stories selling framework, testimonials are your Step 4 (proof).

Your website: Put testimonials on your services page, your about page, and right next to your booking link. The moment someone is deciding whether to book a call, that’s when they need to see proof.

Your lead magnet thank-you page: Right after someone downloads your lead magnet, show them a testimonial and a CTA to book a call. They’re already warm, the testimonial tips them over.

How to Get Testimonials When You’re Just Starting Out

No clients yet? No problem. There are ethical ways to build social proof from day one.

Beta clients: Offer your coaching at a reduced rate to 3-5 people in exchange for a detailed testimonial. Be upfront about the arrangement. You get case studies, they get affordable coaching. Everyone wins.

Free session testimonials: If you offer a free discovery call or audit, ask for feedback on the experience. “That 30-minute call gave me more clarity than 6 months of trying to figure it out alone” is a powerful testimonial even though they didn’t pay.

Community results: If someone implements advice from your free content and gets results, that counts. “I followed Sam’s Instagram bio framework and got 3 DMs the same day” is a testimonial for your expertise.

This approach works perfectly if you’re building a coaching business without a big following. You don’t need thousands of testimonials. Three specific ones will do more than thirty generic ones.

Start Collecting This Week

Go through your last 10 client conversations. Find the ones where someone shared a win. Ask them today if you can share it. You probably have 3-5 testimonials sitting in your DMs right now that you’ve never used. That’s money on the table.
